SARLAT
L'église romane de l'abbaye bénédictine de SARLAT est devenue cathédrale en 1317, quand le pape Jean XXII,ancien évêque de Cahors, créa l'évêché de SARLAT; cet évêché subsista jusqu'en 1790, puis fut rattaché à celui de Périgueux.En 1505, l'évêque Armand de GONTAUD-BIRON confie au maître d'oeuvre Pierre Esclache d'élever une nouvelle cathédrale, réalisée au début sous les ordres du maître-maçon Blaise Bernard. Les travaux furent intermittent, faute d'argent, et aussi à cause des guerres et des épidémies.
Les voûtes seront construites de 1682 à 1685, sous l'épiscopat de François II de Salignac de la Mothe Fénelon, oncle et parrain du célèbre FENELON, précepteur du dauphin et archevêque de Cambrai.
